Katalox ~ Katalox is from Southern Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. Heartwood is dark reddish brown to nearly black, sometimes with a strong purple hue. Sapwood is sharply contrasting and is pale yellowish white. Pieces with curly or wavy grain are not uncommon. Grain is usually straight but can also be irregular or interlocked with a fine even texture and good natural luster.
Figured Maple ~ figured Maple is a domestic hardwood. The sapwood is a mostly white creamy color, but some darker heartwood can be found. The wavy or curly grains produce a "fiddle back" figure and sometimes a "black mottled" figure. The trees grow throughout the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, New England, and the Great Lakes regions.
