The type of wood used in this Jewelry Box is Ambrosia Maple with African Ebony for the drawer pulls. The drawers are lined with suede material. There are no stains or dyes, but rather only a protective finish to enhance the natural wood color.
Ambrosia Maple comes from regular soft maple and Hard Maple trees that have been infested by the ambrosia beetle. The tiny beetle bores a network of tunnels and short galleries called cradles. A fungus is responsible for the blue, gray, and brown streaks and decorative patchwork accompanying each tunnel and adjacent wood. The streaks and patchwork add a unique look to this hardwood without affecting its structural integrity. This wood is primarily found in the central part of the Eastern United States.
The tunnels made from the beetles are tiny. The infestation of the ambrosia beetle is terminated during the kiln drying process and will not start again in dry wood as the beetle needs somewhat wet wood to survive. Ambrosia beetles also infest other species, such as birch, Aspen, and Beech.
Gabon Ebony ~ from equatorial Africa, African Ebony is usually found in wet lowlands near rivers and swamps. Devoid of color, Gabon Ebony has ink black with lighter streaks. Only a small percentage of Ebony (three to five percent) produces the highest quality jet black Ebony. Ebony is hard and costly to produce, making it a rare species to obtain. Ebony is a treasured hardwood used by the Egyptian Pharaohs over 3,000 years ago.
